What is a Wholecloth Quilt?

Unlike a traditional pieced quilt, wholecloth quilts are just what the name suggests.  They are made up of whole pieces of cloth, one on the top and one on the back, layered with a soft lining or batting in between.  The stitching used to hold the material together is what gives the a wholecloth quilt is beauty...

These quilts are made with light, soft, relatively thin batting and are not fluffy like a comforter. The result is a beautiful coverlet that lays straight and flat on the bed and drapes softly down the sides.  Because they are made of all cotton, they breathe well and are suitable for any season.

The battings we use vary depending on the type of quilt you order.  The King, Queen and wall size quilts made in white/natural/cream fabric, use an Organic 100% Cotton batting that is cream in color.  This gives a rich buttery tone to all of these fabrics.  On our baby quilts we use a new product called “Dream Angel” batting that is soft, non-allergenic, and is made of 100% flame retardant fibers.  This batting has been rated the same as fire retardant sleepwear for children and we liked it for the wonderful soft feel.

Once the layers are loaded onto our quilt frame, the colored patterns are stitched.  When the main design is completed in colored thread, we switch thread to a color that matches the fabric.  Different types of echo, meandering, and fill stitching is then added to balance the amount of thread over the entire quilt.  This keeps the quilt from having loose or puffed areas that detract from the design after washing. Each and every quilt will have different background stitches as they are filled in and created as we work. 

After all the stitching is completed, bed and crib sized quilts are then soaked in hot water for an hour in order to shrink the fabric and batting.  After the quilt soaks, it is moved to a hot dryer where it finishes the shrinking process.  Once dry, the quilt now has an antiqued look with beautiful nooks and crannies of fabric that accent the colored threads.   Note: In order to insure that they hang flat, wall hangings do not go through the soaking and drying process.

Finally, the quilt is squared up, and the matching binding is painstakingly hand stitched on to complete the piece. Future washing is recommended in cool water with a cool/air dry cycle.  Excessive heat can possibly continue the shrinking process to the detriment of the quilt.

Each quilt is individually made of premium quality, 100% cotton fabric with a 100% organic cotton heirloom batting or a 80/20 cotton blend, and long staple, 100% cotton thread.  Each piece is made by us in our clean, smoke free, Central Texas studio.
